수련연작(water lily paintings)으로
널리 알려진 인상파화가 모네가, 10대시절
캐리커쳐 알바로 적잖은 용돈을 벌었다는
사실이 생소한 분도 있을거예요.

파리에서 태어난 모네가 5살무렵,
아버지의 사업때문에 가족모두 르아브르
(Le Havre,Normandy)로 이주했어요.

아직 화가가 되겠다는 꿈을 가졌다기보다는
체질상 학교가 따분하고 지겹게 느껴져
수업시간은 책모퉁이에 끼적이며 보냈어요.

오늘날 전해지는 캐리커쳐 중
가장 오래된 작품은 1854년作으로,
15살부터 일을 시작한듯해요.
엄마가 주는 용돈은 성에 차지 않았고
반대할것이 불보듯 뻔한 아버지에게
반항하려는 맘도 있었던것 같아요.

Monet was making extra money
at age 15 drawings caricatures
which he signed O. Monet.
He sold these at a local store
for 10-20 francs a piece.

그림을 살만한 선생님이나 친구등 주변지인을
모델로 작업을 시작했는데, 뛰어난 실력으로
소문나 이내 상당한 수입을 거두게 됐어요.
여기저기서 주문이 밀려들어
총 800여점 제작판매한것으로 보여요.

고도의 집중력으로 인물의 특징을
단시간에 포착해야하는 캐리커쳐 작업은
이후 풍경화에도 긍정적인 영향을 주었어요.

as a caricaturist. My reputation was so
well established that from all sides people
came to me and pestered me for caricatures."

마을 액자가게에서 명화들과 어깨를
나란히하며 인기리에 팔려나간다는
사실에 매우 뿌듯해 했어요.

계속 초상화를 그렸으면 부자가
됐을거라며 그때를 회상했어요.
("Had I gone on like that
I'd be a millionaire today :D")

한편 이곳은 해변 풍경을 유독 많이남긴
부뎅(a marine painter)이 자주찾는 가게였어요.

one of the first French landscape painters
to paint outdoors.

그는 모네의 천부적 재능을 한눈에 알아보고
가게주인에게 이것저것 물어보며
화가와의 만남을 주선해달라고 부탁했어요.

어느날 둘은 가게에서 우연히 만나게 됐어요.
외젠 부뎅은 작품을 극찬하면서도,
모네가 현실에 안주하지 않고
세상으로 나가 대자연의 아름다움을
그리는 화가가 되길 바라며 말했어요.

"You're gifted, anybody can see that.
But you're not going to stop there, I hope."

하지만 모네는 다정한 말들이 부담되고
귀찮아서 피하고 싶었어요.
외젠부뎅이 야외스케치를 나가자고 할때마다
어떻게 예의바르게 거절할지 생각해야 했어요.

결국 핑곗거리가 바닥나, 부뎅을 따라나섰어요.
그날 모네는 뜻밖의 경험을 했어요.
야외에서 본 하늘과 바다, 사람과 동식물은
고유한 본성에 따라 저마다
눈부신 아름다움을 뽐내고 있었어요.
그동안 미처 관심을 기울이지 않았던거죠.

이쯤돼면 거듭되는 거절에도 기꺼이
손내밀어 자연으로 초대한 부뎅이,
인상파의 대가 모네의 역사적 첫걸음을
이끌어 냈다고 해도 과언이 아니죠.
재능덕에 어린나이에 귀인을 만난거예요~

실제로 모네는 자신이 진정한 화가가 된것은
외젠 부뎅덕분이라 말하곤 했어요 :)

안타깝지만 캐리커쳐는 유화작품에 비해
전해지는 작품의수도 적고,
거래및 소장기록이 분명치 않은편이예요...
(기록에 따라 제작년도도 몇년씩 차이를 보여요)

Carter H. Harrison이 1927년 구입하여,
1933년 시카고 미술관에 기증한 Mr. and Mrs.
