윌렘드쿠닝은 1926년 미국에 건너가
1948년 뉴욕 첫 개인전에서 명성을 얻고
1953년 '여인' 연작을 발표해요.
말년에는 알츠하이머를 앓았어요.
70년대는 비록 술과 치매로 주춤했지만
추상작품으로 재기에 성공하여,

길었던 생을 97년 92세의 나이로 마감했어요.

윌렘드쿠닝은 어릴때부터 예술에
관심이 많았지만 가정이 넉넉치 않았어요.
(Born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands)
12살때부터 디자인회사의 견습공이 되었어요.
야간에는 수업을 들었는데 (at the prestigious
Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts and Techniques),
이곳은 1998년부터 그의 이름을 따 Willem de
Kooning Academie(WDKA)로 불리우고 있어요.

1926년에는 친구(Leo Cohan)의
도움을 받아 밀항하여 미국에 입성,
이듬해 뉴욕에 청착했어요.
아직 화가가 되려는 포부보다
아메리칸드림을 꿈꾸는 소년에 불과했지만
이내 가옥 도장업자(house painter)가 되어
상업화가로의 성공적 첫걸음을 내딧었어요.
뉴욕 화가친구들과도 친해졌어요.
도움을 받아 밀항하여 미국에 입성,
이듬해 뉴욕에 청착했어요.

공공사업진흥국 (WPA,the Works Project
Administration)의 벽화작업을 맡았어요.
브룩클린의 Williamsburg Federal Housing
Project등을 진행하며 생계를 이어가지만,
American citizenship시민권이 없어서
일을 그만두게 돼요. 이때부터
전업화가가 되기로 마음을 굳힌듯 해요.

뉴욕에 새로운 사조가 등장했지만
당시 파리를 중심으로 한
피카소의 명성을 넘기란,
불가능할것만 같던 시기예요.
하지만 드쿠닝은 도전장을 내밀었어요.

이윽고 World War II(1939-45)을 지나
추상표현주의가 꽃을 피운 50년대 ,
뉴욕은 세계미술의 중심지로 떠올랐어요.
