터너상(1984~)
매년 영국 테이트(✏Tate Gallery)에서
가장 핫한 예술가에게 수여하는 상이예요.
영국의 대표화가 J. M. W. Turner
(1775~1851)를 기리며 1984년 개최된 이래

가장 권위있는 현대미술상으로 자리잡았어요.
Tate Britain에서 시상과 수상작가의
전시회를 주관하고 있어요.
매년 5월, 영국내 주목할만한 전시나
활동을 보인 (50세미만)예술가를 선별해
후보자명단(Shortlist)을 공개하고,
10월부터 Tate Britain에서 전시를 열어
12월 시상식을 통해 최종수상자를 발표해요.
심사위원단은 매년 바뀌는데,
가장많이 참석한 예술계인사로는 18번 참여한
Nicholas Serota(Director, Tate)인듯 해요.
생중계되는 시상식에는 영국뿐 아니라
국제미술계의 이목이 집중되요.
그만큼 논란의 중심에 있기도 해요.
수상자는 1~4만파운드의 상금을 받아요.
(해를 거듭하면서 영국에서 활동하는 외국인,
해외에서 활동하는 영국인을 포함하는것으로
수상자의 범위가 넓어졌어요.)
헨리 테이트경(Sir Henry Tate)이
운영에 어려움을 겪고 있던 국립미술관에
건축자금을 기부하고 미술품을 기증한 덕에
1897년 National Gallery of British Art란
미술관이 개관하게 되어,
테이트 갤러리라 불리게 됐어요.
오늘날 테이트는 산하 4개의 미술관을 아우르는
기관으로서, 영국과 해외의 현대미술관련
국가 소장품을 전시관리하고 있어요.
1988년 개관한 테이트 리버풀(Tate Liverpool)
1993년 설립된 T.세인트 이브스(Tate St Ives)
2000년 분리된 T. 브리튼(Tate Britain)과
테이트 모던(Tate Modern)이 이에 속해요.
특별히 07~08년, 테이트 브리튼에서
역대수상자들의 회고전이 열렸어요.
