2014년 국내에서 최초로 대전 시립미술관:
피카소와 천재화가들展을 통해 선보여졌어요.

✏대전 시립미술관
전시목록에는 피카소,고야,앵그르,들라크루아,
마네,드가,모딜리아니, 조지아오키프, 로스코,
김환기등 엄선된 68명 예술가들의 작품 85점이
포함되었죠. (서울과 대전의 작품목록에서
큰 차이없는 순회전 인듯해요.)
2013년부터 전시준비에 돌입했어요. 미술관이
필립스에 우선적으로 대여를 희망한 작품은
앵그르의 ‘목욕하는 여인’과
드가의 ‘스트레칭하는 무용수들’ 등이였어요.
필립스 컬렉션측에서 미술관의온도 습도유지관련한 전시장 시설에
불만을 표했고, 확정전까지전시작품
목록이 수십차례 수정되었어요.
The Blue Room도 목록에 있었지만
우선 순위는 아니였어요. 그런데 전시를
앞둔시점에 숨겨진 그림에 대한
진보된 연구 결과가 발표되어
대여목록에서 빠진거예요.
한국에서 볼수 없으니 안타까워했죠.
그러다 극적으로 대여받을수 있었는데
미술관측은 뜻밖에 이목이 집중된 그림을
전시할수 있어 아주 행복해한 일이 있었어요.

젊은여인을 그린 작품 '푸른방'에 대해
붓질이 전반적인 윤곽에 들어맞지 않고,
전체적인 페인팅의 방향이 달라
어색한점이 보인다는 지적을 해왔어요.
1954년 한 복원전문가도 odd brushstrokes에
대해 지적하며 숨겨진 그림에 대한 의문을
제기했지만, 확인할 방법은 없었어요.

1990년대 이르러서야 기술(x-ray)의 도움으로
표면아래 숨겨진 이미지가 있음을 발견했어요.
실루엣으로보아 초상화일것으로 예상했지만
워낙 흐릿해서 확신할수는 없었어요.
2008년, 적외선 영상기술을 도입한덕에
숨겨진 이미지가 좀더 명확해져
수염이 있는 남성의 초상임이 드러났지만,
'The mystery man'에 대한
의문이 해소되진 않았어요.

이후 전문가와 미술관(Phillips Collection,
National Gallery of Art, Cornell University,
Delaware's Winterthur Museum)은
몇년 간의 공동연구를 통해
2014년, 가려진 남성은 나비넥타이를 메고
수염이 있으며 , 3개의 반지를 착용한
손으로 머리를 괴고 있음을 밝혀냈어요.
세로로 완성한 이 남성의 초상화를
가로로 눕혀 푸른방을 완성한 거였어요.
더불어 이 남성이 앙브루아즈 볼라르
(Ambroise Vollard)일 가능성을 제기했어요.
하지만 볼라르는 보석을 많이 착용하는 편이
아니였기 때문에 단정지을수는 없다고 해요.

한편 남성의 윤곽이 드러나자 사람들은
피카소가 왜 이미 완성한 초상화를 덮고
여인을 그렸는지에 대해 궁금해 했어요.

사실 이는 가난한 예술가들에게 흔한일이었고
피카소는 당시 19살에 불과했어요.

예술사학자들에 의하면 피카소가 다작하는
화가였지만 캔버스와 화구를 필요한 만큼
구입할 경제적인 여유가 없었으며,
필립스 컬렉션의 큐레이터에 따르면
피카소가 비싼 캔버스대신 종종
판지에 작업을 했다고 해요.
피카소의 작품속에 숨겨진 그림이
발견된것이 이번이 처음은 아니예요.
특히 초기작에서 종종 볼수 있어요.

클리블랜드 미술관이 1945년에 기증받은
<La Vie 인생> 역시, 1899년에 완성하여
1900년 파리 국제 박람회에 전시한 작품이
숨겨져 있음이 밝혀졌어요.

1989년 적외선 카메라로 검사한결과
뉴욕 구겐하임에 있는
<Woman Ironing다림질하는 여인>에서도
숨겨진 초상화를 발견했어요.
따라서 막 파리로 건너와
아직 어리고 가난했던 피카소가
새로운 아이디어가 떠올라서 우연히
초상화 위에 다른 그림을 덧입힌듯 해요.
암튼 푸른방에 대한 연구는 계속되고 있으며
필립스 컬렉션은 2017년쯤 푸른방에
초점을 맞춘 전시회를 기획중이라고 해요.
