뒤샹은 프랑스 노르망디의 블랭빌
크레봉에서 태어났어요.
1887年7月28日出生于法国薄兰韦勒。

외할아버지가 사업으로 성공을 이루고
예술가의 길을 걸었었는데, 뒤샹이
그의 영향을 받았음을 되짚었어요.
뒤샹의 7형제중 의사와 변호사란 직업도
포기한 두형과, 여동생 모두 예술가 였어요.
블랭빌의 시장을 지낸 부친도
자녀들에게 재정적 지원을 아끼지 않았어요.
형들은 후에 파리에서 경력을 쌓아
입체주의 그룹내 핵심인물이 되요.

일찌기 중학교 드로잉 수업에서
원근법과 투사법을 익힌 뒤샹의
드물게 전해지는 초기작품 중 하나가 아래의
<블랭빌 성당Church at Blainville,1902>이예요.
가족이 살던집이 성당 근처에 있었어요.
고등학교 시절 뒤샹의 작품이 인상주의
화풍으로 해석되곤 하는데, 마침
미술계의 공식적인 환영을 받진 못했지만
인상주의의 새바람이 불던 때라 그런듯해요.
이와 관련해서는, 특히 좋아하던
모네MONET의 영향이 미약하게
작품에 드러난것일 뿐이라고 말했어요.

1904년 졸업(中学毕业)후 파리에 거주하던
친형과 함께 지내면서 예술학교에 입학해요.
형Jacques Villon은 파리의 전업만화가였어요.
위에 그를 담은 스케치작품이 보이죠.
본명은 가스통 뒤샹이였는데 15세기 프랑스
시인 프랑수아 비용을 기리며 개명했어요.
동시에 법대를 관두고 페르낭 코르몽
Frenand Cormon의 아틀리에에 등록해요.
(코르몽은 로트렉 편에서 언급했던 화가죠.
툴루즈 로트렉Toulouse-Lautrec,
에밀 베르나르 Émile Bernard,
빈센트 반고흐Vincent van Gogh 도
이 화실에 다닌적이 있어요.)
자크비용은 후에 판화가로 명성을 얻어요.

이듬해 에콜데 보자르( École des Beaux-Arts)에
낙방하고 파리로 돌아와 몇년간
삽화작업에 몰두해요. (画漫画插图)
같은해 1905년 인쇄술(typography
and printing processes)을 익혔는데
이는 후기 작업에 중요하게 작용해요.
큰형의 도움으로 1908년 살롱도통에서
작품 3점을 선보이고, 다음해
( in the 1908 Salon d'Automne)
살롱 데 앙데팡당에도 2점을 전시했어요.
( in the Salon des Indépendants)
여기서 뒤샹의 누드작품을 본 비평가
기욤 아폴리네르Guillaume Apollinaire가
혹평('Duchamp's very ugly nudes')을
하는데, 후에 둘은 친한사이가 돼요 :)
이때 야수파(野兽派)와 입체주의(立体主义)
예술가들과 깊이 교류하면서
화풍에 변화를 보여요.
(渐渐转向那种比较自由的表现风格)
1911년은 모델 Jeanne Serra와의 사이에서
딸을 낳았어요 :) 이듬해 살롱 데 앙데팡당에
<Nude Descending a Staircase No.2/下楼的女人2>
를 출품하는데, 제목을 바꾸라는 위원장의
지시를 따르지 않아 전시는 못했어요.
(이는 1913년 뉴욕 아모리쇼에 전시되면서
미술계의 격한논쟁을 불러일으킨 작품이예요)
같은해 뮌헨(慕尼黑)에서 여름을 보내면서
<The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors>의
구상을 시작해서 1923년 이 작품을 완성해요.

taken by the artist’s friend Man Ray,shows the back of Duchamp’s head
with his star/comet tonsure haircut.
The motivations for and circumstances
surrounding the haircut remain unclear,
but the tonsure and star/comet
imagery have multiple meanings.
